Teaching resources on the topic of ‘Protest & Participation’

Hamburger Stiftung für Wirtschaftsethik

In an exemplary teaching concept, the Foundation uses the planning of Hamburg’s new ‘Mitte Altona’ district as an example to demonstrate how conflicts surrounding urban development and infrastructure projects can provide a concrete starting point for exploring the topic of ‘Protest & Participation’ in the classroom. The materials take equal account of the political, economic and social aspects. In addition, the Foundation analyses numerous other real-life cases from Germany and provides recommendations for addressing these topics in lessons at vocational and general education schools.

In the run-up to the forthcoming referendum on 29 November 2015, two teaching units were also developed on Hamburg’s bid for the 2024 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. The materials are available to download free of charge from the project’s website and are regularly updated. Teachers have the opportunity to suggest further case studies for analysis. The Foundation also offers to organise project days.

The design of the teaching materials draws on the experiences gained from a pilot project carried out in 2012 and 2013, also under the name “Stadt! Macht! School!” were incorporated into the design of the teaching materials. In that project, a group of young people spent a year examining the plans for “Mitte Altona” and contributing their own proposals to the process.

“Stadt! Macht! Schule!” is funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Stiftung Hamburger Wohnen.
