Stadt! Macht! Schule!
As part of the ‘Stadt! Macht! Schule!’ project, the foundation has adapted real-life cases from the theme of ‘Protest & Participation’ for use in lessons at general and vocational schools.
The aim was to harness the potential that conflicts in urban areas offer for teaching politics, economics and social studies in schools. The teaching resources and materials developed are available free of charge.
In addition to developing the teaching materials, the project comprised two further components. Firstly, the topic of ‘Protest & Participation’ formed the subject of a seminar as part of teacher training. Secondly, the Foundation offered interested educational institutions in the Hamburg area the opportunity to run one or more sessions as project days.
The example of ‘Mitte Altona’, a new district being developed on former railway land in a central location in Hamburg. Here, the Foundation draws on experience from its pilot project carried out in 2012 and 2013, also under the name Stadt! Macht! Schule! The project involved a group of young people who spent a year engaging with the planning for ‘Mitte Altona’ and contributing their own proposals to the process. The development of teaching materials and the analysis of numerous case studies from Germany were completed in the summer of 2016.
