B1: Gentrification

The concept of gentrification is ever-present when it comes to issues of urban development. But where does it actually come from – and what does it mean? Is gentrification a threat, or can it also be a positive process?

This lesson uses a (fictional) example of a married couple who have lived near ‘Mitte Altona’ for decades and, due to a new-build project, fear they will soon be unable to afford their flat as a result of rent increases. Using the text as a basis, pupils explore the various facets of gentrification and summarise them in a diagram from the perspective of different stakeholders.

In addition to the text material and the tasks, the unit includes references to further sources, including films. The methodological guidelines are deliberately kept to a minimum to ensure a high degree of adaptability in terms of difficulty. The content of this unit is closely linked to Unit B2 (Housing Sector).
