24 May: Senator Jutta Blankau at the final of ‘Stadt! Macht! Schule!’
On Friday 24 May 2013, participants in the ‘Stadt! Macht! Schule!’ project will publicly present their position paper on the ‘Mitte Altona’ urban development scheme and discuss their proposals and demands with Jutta Blankau, Senator for Urban Development and the Environment.
For years, the planning of ‘Mitte Altona’ – currently Hamburg’s second-largest urban development project – has been the subject of controversy amongst the various stakeholders. Politicians, landowners, investors, business owners and local residents are negotiating and discussing the development of the site at the long-distance railway station, where, amongst other things, 3,500 flats are to be built. Altona’s young people, who will be most affected by the long-term changes to their neighbourhood, have so far had little say in the matter, despite extensive public participation.
As part of ‘Stadt! Macht! Schule!’, a project run by the Hamburger Stiftung für Wirtschaftsethik and funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung, a group of 24 pupils has now spent eight months examining ‘Mitte Altona’ and formulating their own demands. At the heart of their deliberations is the question of how a vibrant and sustainable neighbourhood with affordable housing can be created whilst taking economic interests into account.
To mark the conclusion of the project, the young Hamburg residents will not only present their position paper and discuss it with Senator Jutta Blankau, but will also provide an insight into their work on Stadt! Macht! Schule! through short presentations and a film they have produced themselves.
The event, taking place at the Alfred Schnittke Academy, Max-Brauer-Allee 24, 22765 Hamburg, begins at 6 pm and will conclude around 7.30 pm with drinks and snacks.
