Electrical and electronic equipment recycling: EWAM Academy in Nairobi

The Hamburger Stiftung für Wirtschaftsethik has funded the production of an infographic illustrating value creation processes in electrical recycling. The resulting roll-up display was recently used at a specialist event in Nairobi (Kenya).

The ‘E-waste Academy – Managers Edition’ (EWAM), organised for the third time by the United Nations University, brought together experts from various disciplines as well as representatives from governments and the recycling industry. In addition to the substantive work carried out in numerous workshops, the participants visited the WEEE Centre in Nairobi to dismantle electrical appliances themselves. The roll-up was used for illustrative purposes, including during a presentation on notification or Prior Informed Consent (PIC) procedures, and is set to be used at further conferences in the coming months.

As part of its Ethical Risk Assessment project – a core area of its work – the Hamburger Stiftung für Wirtschaftsethik focuses intensively on analysing ethical risks in value chains and published the era-paper ‘Electrical Recycling: An Ethical Risk Assessment’ in 2012.
