Emancipatory career guidance – for an education system that offers equal opportunities

We are looking for teachers at schools in Hamburg to take part in our PhD project on emancipatory career guidance.

Objective: The aim is to develop a well-structured teaching sequence on emancipatory career guidance, which will yield specific recommendations for the design of curricula and teaching materials for social studies lessons in Hamburg’s schools.

Background: Young people from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds, in particular, face challenges in the world of work that all too often result in a cycle of the transition system and unemployment.

This is due not least to the fact that key perspectives on equal opportunities – such as knowledge of non-linear educational pathways, social mobility or employers’ actual expectations of jobseekers – are lacking in current curricula and teaching materials. The aim is to provide guidance to the workforce of tomorrow and to embed career decisions – beyond their identity-forming nature – as economic actions within the social context.

Offer: We provide teachers with high-quality concepts for emancipatory career guidance for three teaching sequences with varying content, each lasting at least 2 x 90 minutes, in the 2024/25 school year. As part of our multi-stage research process, based on a design-oriented paradigm, the developed teaching unit will be piloted in Hamburg schools and evaluated with input from teachers, which will in turn inform redesigns and further piloting.

You will play an active role in shaping recommendations for education that promotes equal opportunities and will also gain access to the work of the Hamburger Stiftung für Wirtschaftsethik, which has developed a wide range of teaching materials for social science education and regularly organises educational events.

Get in touch: If you would like to find out more about the project ‘Emancipatory Career Guidance – for an education that offers equal opportunities’ or are interested in supporting the research process as a teacher with your Year 7 to 9 class, please feel free to contact Alexandra Josef directly.
