ethos wins the ‘Textbook of the Year’ award

The ethos project has received the SCHULEWIRTSCHAFT network’s schoolbook prize for its publication “Business and Corporate Ethics – 15 Building Blocks for Economic and Socio-Political Education”. The editors, Thomas Retzmann and Tilman Grammes, accepted the award at the German Economic Institute in Cologne.

The ‘Textbook of the Year – Economic Education’ quality seal was awarded for the third time. The competition is held under the patronage of Sigmar Gabriel, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy. The award recognises publications that provide an accurate and unbiased presentation of economic relationships and demonstrate a convincing methodological and didactic approach.

The ethos project aims to contribute to embedding the topic of ‘Ethics in Business’ more firmly in school teaching by designing innovative teaching units. In addition to imparting knowledge of business ethics, the central aim is to develop the ability to make ethical judgements and take appropriate action in a business context. The materials were developed by experienced teachers from general and vocational schools, as well as recognised experts in the didactics of economics and politics, under the guidance of the editors Prof. Dr Thomas Retzmann (University of Duisburg-Essen) and Prof. Dr Tilman Grammes (University of Hamburg). The ethos modules present topics such as the possibilities and limitations of ethical investment, the credibility of environmental and social labels, corporate CSR concepts, and the debate surrounding whistleblowing in a way that is tailored to the subject’s didactic requirements. All materials are designed for upper secondary education. In 2012, ethos had already been awarded the prestigious Max Weber Prize for Business Ethics in the school/textbook category.
