Symposium on the Pedagogy of Philosophy and Ethics

Representatives from the worlds of research and teaching gathered in Tübingen for the 9th Symposium of the Forum on the Didactics of Philosophy and Ethics. The two-day meeting was entitled ‘Experiments: On the Role of Empirical Research in Philosophy, Ethics and their Didactics’.

What role do psychological findings play in the teaching of philosophy and ethics? Should philosophy itself conduct empirical research? And is it possible to use experiments in the teaching of philosophy and ethics? These and many other questions were the focus of the symposium held on 25 and 26 September 2015. The discussions centred on research findings from the fields of psychology, philosophy and education, as well as the practical experiences of teachers.

On behalf of the Hamburger Stiftung für Wirtschaftsethik, Christopher van Dillen presented a section of his doctoral thesis on fostering moral judgement. In his talk, he focused on the role of psychological theories in relation to the subject under investigation, as well as on analysing the implications for teaching practice. Within its ‘Education & Research’ programme, the Foundation addresses the development and promotion of judgement from both a theoretical and a practical teaching perspective.
