Stadt! Macht! Schule! On the move in ‘Mitte Altona’
The ‘Stadt! Macht! Schule!’ project made the most of the first two hours of sunshine this year to go on an excursion. The young people had a look around ‘Mitte Altona’ – on the railway site where a new neighbourhood is soon to be built. The verdict after the site visit: this new heart of the district is quite large.
We now know what the listed goods warehouses in the planning area look like at the moment. We are still considering what should happen there in the coming years. Initial suggestions include cafés, a steam locomotive exhibition and a skate park. None of this is easy to implement, as Johannes Gerdelmann from the Department for Urban Development and the Environment explained to our camera. Thermal insulation, heating, fire safety and emergency exits are all required – which can quickly add up to a few million euros in costs. So it’s a tricky task for us to come up with a suitable concept.
We also found the visit from urban planner Mario Bloem very helpful; we were able to discuss many of our ideas with him. We are now keen to see how Hamburg’s Chief Planning Officer, Jörn Walter, and SPD politician Mark Classen will respond to our questions. Both will be guests at our panel discussion in February. Our video, the first footage of which was shot in the Güterhallen, will be available to watch in May. Filming is currently underway.
