Stadt! Macht! Schule! submits a position paper to the Senator

The participants in the ‘Stadt! Macht! Schule!’ project have presented their position paper on the ‘Mitte Altona’ urban development project to Jutta Blankau, Senator for Urban Development. There is considerable interest in the young people’s views: the hall at the Alfred Schnittke Academy was packed to capacity for the event.

In front of a large audience, the project group outlined their vision for the new neighbourhood in Altona and discussed their proposals with the Senator. Girls and boys from five schools had worked on the proposal. They want a neighbourhood with plenty of space for affordable housing and affordable premises for local businesses, but little space for cars. The young Hamburg residents presented concrete plans for the park, the school and a cultural café run independently by young people.

Both the Senator and the architect and town planner André Poitiers, winner of the urban design competition for ‘Mitte Altona’, subsequently encouraged the young people to continue getting involved. The Hamburger Stiftung für Wirtschaftsethik will continue to offer the pupils support even after the project has ended. After the summer break, ‘Stadt! Macht! Schule!’ will present the position paper to the Planning Committee of the Altona District Assembly.
