The Torture Dilemma

The ‘torture dilemma’ exercise examines a realistic situation that has already occurred. Participants usually already know the outcome or have prior knowledge of it. However, the central question is what decision one would have made oneself in that dilemma.

In this exercise, the focus is on the interplay between the legal and moral dimensions of the decision and its consequences.

In a second step, the case is placed within its political context using legal texts and extracts from the grounds for the judgement.
