Tax evasion in the cocoa industry
Tax evasion is a major problem in the cocoa industry, particularly through smuggling.
Varying export tax rates in West African cocoa-producing countries often create incentives to smuggle cocoa beans across borders. If domestic demand falls, farmers who can only feed their families by selling their entire harvest are often left with no choice: they must resort to illegal means to sell their beans.
