C1: Urban concepts – How do we want to live?
What ideas do we actually have when it comes to living together in the city? So what sort of neighbourhood or district does it need to be for us to feel at home there? What matters most to us? And who exactly is ‘we’ – what different interests might clash?
It’s not at all easy to answer these questions from a classroom or a living room. It becomes easier if we go to where the issues are actually playing out: into the city. There, we can experience what it is that makes Altona (or any other district) so special – and what it might mean when people talk about ‘Mitte Altona’ needing to blend in with the character of the surrounding neighbourhoods.
The unit is designed as a field trip – at least to Altona, or better still to various locations across Hamburg. As well as suggested routes, the material includes an observation sheet with guiding questions, on which pupils take notes at the individual locations. The results can be presented in a variety of ways: for example, in discussions, on posters, as a collage, as a video or in journalistic texts.
