C2: Social structure and segregation
There is a lot of talk about ‘social mix’ in the planning of ‘Mitte Altona’. But what does that actually mean? In the neighbourhoods bordering the new district, people like to highlight the ‘typical Altona mix’ – a coexistence of many cultures, nationalities, lifestyles and income groups. This is the result of numerous influencing factors, some of which will be examined in more detail.
For example, pupils examine differences in the social structure of Hamburg’s neighbourhoods using statistical data and discuss possible implications based on various planning scenarios for ‘Mitte Altona’. This creates numerous links to the units on gentrification and the housing sector. At the same time, pupils practise searching a database and working with statistical data. A concluding discussion can focus closely on aspects of social structure, but may also incorporate broader issues such as the distribution of housing.
