Cocoa

Cocoa

The cocoa tree is fussy. It only grows under specific conditions and with very good care. The better the final chocolate product is to be, the more important the quality of the plant becomes. However, the conditions under which cocoa farmers work and live today are increasingly being affected by climate change, rising commodity prices and many other factors.

To ensure they can continue to make a living from cocoa farming, a larger share of the value added would need to go to the farmers. This is also in the interests of producers of chocolate and cocoa products – because without cocoa beans, there is no cocoa. But who ultimately takes responsibility for the living conditions of cocoa farmers, for example in West Africa? And what role do the state, politicians and consumers play?
