Cocoa sector: Farmers’ organisation presents Vision 2025
The World Cocoa Farmers Organisation (WCFO) presented its ‘Vision 2025’ strategy in Amsterdam in early December 2017. Following this, the organisation’s leaders discussed its strategic direction with the invited stakeholders.
The day before, numerous details regarding the roadmap, the bottom-up approach and the further timetable had already been agreed internally between the national members of the WCFO and members of the Advisory Board of the partner organisation, the FarmGate Foundation. The WCFO represents the interests of cocoa farmers and farm workers, whose share of the sector’s value added is extremely small.
Although feedback from the various stakeholder groups, amongst other things, has highlighted just how ambitious the WCFO’s project is in some respects, the meeting above all clearly demonstrated how essential it is for cocoa farmers to have a stronger presence and representation in the various value chain initiatives.
The Hamburger Stiftung für Wirtschaftsethik supports the development of the WCFO through the work of Dr Christiane Hellar on the FarmGate Foundation’s Advisory Board. In the cocoa sector, the Foundation is also involved, amongst other things, as a member of the Forum for Sustainable Cocoa and published its era paper ‘Cocoa: An Ethical Risk Assessment’ in 2017.
